I need someone to fix my website. Where do I start?

Short answer

Work out what kind of broken it is first, because each kind needs a different person. Offline, erroring, insecure, or impossible to update is an engineering problem. Looking dated or not ranking on Google is a design, content or marketing problem. When you ask for help, send what you see (screenshots, the exact error, the address), where the site is hosted, and who built it. That turns a vague "fix my website" into something someone can actually quote.

What's the problem

Something is wrong with your website and you need someone to fix it. But "website people" range from designers to marketers to developers, quotes come back for completely different jobs, and you can't tell who's right for this.

Why it happens

  • "Broken" means different things. Down, slow, insecure, showing errors, broken forms, or simply old-looking each need different skills.
  • Nobody knows how it was built. WordPress, a site builder, or custom code, each fixed differently, and often the person who set it up is gone.
  • Vague requests get vague quotes. Without specifics, a provider can only guess, or quote for a rebuild.

How to fix it

  1. Name the symptom. Down for everyone? An error code? "Not secure"? Redirecting somewhere strange? Slow? Or just old-looking? The dictionary has an entry for most of these: down, Not secure, hacked, slow.
  2. Find out what it's built on and where it's hosted. Your hosting account, old invoices, or the developer's handover notes.
  3. Make sure you can log in to the domain, hosting and site admin. If you can't, fix that first. See your developer is gone.
  4. Write a short brief: what's wrong, since when, screenshots, the address, and what "fixed" means to you.
  5. Send it to the right kind of help: a developer for anything broken, insecure or offline; a designer or marketer for looks, content and search ranking.
  6. Ask for a fixed price against your brief, and confirm the accounts stay in your name.

When to call Preventionlabs

When it's broken, insecure, offline, or can't be updated, especially when it's an app, not just a brochure site. A resurrection gets it running in your own hosting account, protected to MVP level and on scalable infrastructure. Design, content, marketing and search ranking aren't part of what we do. Submit it with a description of what's wrong; the assessment is free, and tells you in writing what it takes.
